Specific Challenges
I'm wondering if anyone can give me a good idea of the specific challenges older students face when going back to school? I am going back this summer after being out of school for 10+ years. I envision problems with retaining and memorizing new information. Any recommendations for this?

Going to school means to gain knowledge. Knowledge is given by the teachers and teachers does not look the age bar. Don't think of any one or what other says. Just make your knowledge strong and try to get first rank or be topper in the class this will help you out to make a friend and teachers will admire you. So don't think of your age just make yourself comfortable in a class. Try to be friendly with all the student in class. |

RE: Specific Challenges
Gaining knowledge does not look at age bar. You just join school and try to be friendly with all your class mate. Try to get rank or be a topper of the school it will help you to make your teacher and student friendly with you. And my best suggestion is watch movie called May Hoo Na.

RE: Specific Challenges
I don't think retaining knowledge/information will be a problem unless you have a particularly bad teacher or no interest in the material. It's scary to go back after 10 years, as I know from my own experience, but you will find that school is definitely a different experience now than it was ten years ago.
To me, the hardest part is time management. As a working adult, you may have a spouse, children, a full time job, etc. that you have to work around. That can be a challenge. But it can be and is being done every day. The key is to sit down with your loved ones and discuss how it will all work, make sure your employer is aware of any changes school will create in your schedule, and sit down and plan your time, then stick to it. Life will get in the way sometimes, but you'll get through it. And it gets easier as you go. Good luck! ~Mary Student, Coach, Writer |

I went back to school after 30+ years, I will be graduating in December, 2010. After my family, this has been the most rewarding event in my entire life. Do not be afraid of counseling, but make your own decisions, plan carefully, set a time frame, do not get discouraged even though there will be times in which it won't be so easy, be confident, "you" need to know that "you" can do it. Good luck

RE: Specific Challenges
I am actually looking into how best to balance these aspects of my life currently and am doing an essay on the subject. I would appreciate hearing from anyone with specific information on how they managed, or failed to, balance them in a healthy, effective way.
