New member work questions
Hi I am a new member. I have decided to return to college to complete my nursing Degree. I am 45 and work full-time on a hog farm. My son attends Purdue U full-time. We had a talk last night and he said it would be very hard for me to go back to school and work 45 hours per week. I have been trying to decide whether I should cut my hours at work, or try and work full-time and go to college full-time. I am scared I won't be able to afford school if I only work part-time. Are there resourses to help me decide?

RE: New member work questions
Good for you wanting to obtain your goal. I agree with your son that working 45 hrs a week and going to school full time would be quite a challenge--for a student of any age. As you may know, the rule of thumb is that for each hour in class, you need to optimally spend 2-3 hours outside of class studying or preparing.
Ultimately, the best resource to help you decide is yourself. You could try it and see how it goes, but it would probably be hard to sustain, and you may find yourself dropping classes a few weeks in. A alternate idea is to start out part-time, or just one class. When you get into the rhythm of that, then you might add another class. One of my favorite tricks is to just take the 168 hours in each week and subtract from it all the time dedicated to each task you do over the week each day and see what's left. For example: 168 hrs - 56 (sleep - skimping here will slow you down in the long run) - 45 work - 15 Full-time classroom hours - 45 studying / prep / outside classroom leaves you with just 7 hours, one a day, to take care of other things, such as commuting, housework, family, entertainment, exercise, errands, appointments, etc. Good luck!
