Specific Challenges
I'm wondering if anyone can give me a good idea of the specific challenges older students face when going back to school? I am going back this summer after being out of school for 10+ years. I envision problems with retaining and memorizing new information. Any recommendations for this? Big Grin

Going to school means to gain knowledge. Knowledge is given by the teachers and teachers does not look the age bar. Don't think of any one or what other says. Just make your knowledge strong and try to get first rank or be topper in the class this will help you out to make a friend and teachers will admire you. So don't think of your age just make yourself comfortable in a class. Try to be friendly with all the student in class.

Gaining knowledge does not look at age bar. You just join school and try to be friendly with all your class mate. Try to get rank or be a topper of the school it will help you to make your teacher and student friendly with you. And my best suggestion is watch movie called May Hoo Na.

RE: Specific Challenges
I don't think retaining knowledge/information will be a problem unless you have a particularly bad teacher or no interest in the material. It's scary to go back after 10 years, as I know from my own experience, but you will find that school is definitely a different experience now than it was ten years ago.

To me, the hardest part is time management. As a working adult, you may have a spouse, children, a full time job, etc. that you have to work around. That can be a challenge. But it can be and is being done every day. The key is to sit down with your loved ones and discuss how it will all work, make sure your employer is aware of any changes school will create in your schedule, and sit down and plan your time, then stick to it.

Life will get in the way sometimes, but you'll get through it. And it gets easier as you go.

Good luck!

I went back to school after 30+ years, I will be graduating in December, 2010. After my family, this has been the most rewarding event in my entire life. Do not be afraid of counseling, but make your own decisions, plan carefully, set a time frame, do not get discouraged even though there will be times in which it won't be so easy, be confident, "you" need to know that "you" can do it.

RE: Specific Challenges
I am actually looking into how best to balance these aspects of my life currently and am doing an essay on the subject. I would appreciate hearing from anyone with specific information on how they managed, or failed to, balance them in a healthy, effective way.

Retaining knowledge is a great idea and I don't see any problems about it.

RE: Specific Challenges
I am currently planing to go back to school for the second time. The first time I entered back to school after working as a chef for 10 years. I was still in my 20th having trained in Europe. I had 2 challenges English was my second language and having been from another school system. At first I felt rusty and overwhelmed. I also worked full time and went to school at night. My study time was very limited and my grades at times showed my lack of time and week spot in the English language. However I managed to graduate. One of only 6 in my evening class.

Now after 18 years and 2 children I decided to continue and get my bachelor degree. I gather I will feel rusty at first again. However, my English and writing skills are far better now. My main concern will be managing my time and family. I plan on continuing my business wile going back to school. Due to our economy my business is slower and it should allow me the time to mange school and business. I am preparing my children now to what I expect of them when and wile I study. I am also reading up on study guides and time management before starting my program.

In the coming weeks I am planing to meet with one of the department professors to gather more tips and advise about how to go best attaining my degree. I will prepare a knowledge portfolio so he sees off hand where I am coming from. I am planing to pick as many brains as I can to reach my goal.
